Brake Repair

If you’re in Sacramento, CA and you need brake service, you’ve come to the right place with Auto Express Sacramento. At Auto Express Sacramento, we take professionalism to a new level, with ASE-certified technicians who go by Motorist Assurance Program Uniform Inspection guidelines to ensure your car’s brake system performs safely and reliably. That means using OEM-quality parts, replacing all hardware that goes along with a brake job and giving the entire brake system a thorough inspection for corrosion, wear or damage.

How Brakes Work

Brakes work on hydraulic pressure; a liquid like brake fluid can’t be compressed, so instead it can be used to deliver pressure to other parts. Your car’s wheels are bolted to smooth steel discs called rotors, with a caliper mounted to each disc. When you step on the brake pedal, you send pressure from the brake system’s master cylinder through the brake lines and down to smaller cylinders in the brake calipers. These cylinders then force the brake pads onto the rotor, much the same as how bicycle handbrakes work, and slow the vehicle down through friction. Many older vehicles still have drum brakes in the rear; with drum brakes, curved brake shoes expand inside a pan-shape drum and drag on the drum’s lining to slow the vehicle.

Brake friction material wears very slowly – so slowly that you can easily get accustomed to poorer brake performance and not really notice when they’re wearing to the point of needing replacement. These are all signs to look out for, though:

  • Longer stopping distancesBrake Repair & Service Sacramento, CA
  • Tendency for one or more wheels to lock up and skid while braking
  • Brake pedal goes farther to floor before brakes engage
  • Squealing or grinding noise
  • Noticeable pull to one side while braking
  • Pulsation through steering wheel or brake pedal while braking
  • Brakes feel “spongy” or soft underfoot
  • Illuminated Brake or ABS light on dashboard

The average driver in the United States puts about 14,000 miles per year on a vehicle. If you were to attach a counter to the brake pedal of that vehicle, it would total up about 75,000 applications of the brakes in a year’s time. Still taking your brake system for granted? Make an appointment with Auto Express of Sacramento, CA and let our ASE-certified techs check your brakes’ condition.
